Wassaic Charcoal Kilns now belong to the Town of Amenia

On the morning of July 3, 2025, a small group of local residents gathered at an historic place for an historic occasion. The place was on Deep Hollow Road, the site of two Wassaic Charcoal Kilns that have stood for 200 years as the only architectural remnants of the Amenia Iron Industry. The occasion was the official transfer of ownership of the Kilns from the Deep Hollow Preserve, represented by manager Bernie Leighton, to the Town of Amenia, represented by Town Supervisor Leo Blackman. Patriot Roadside Marker

April 26, 2025 Revolutionary War Patriot Sign Unveiled Old Amenia Burying Ground, Mygatt Rd., Amenia, NY Assisted by Dutchess County Sons of the American Revolution and the Pomeroy Foundation, a Patriot Roadside Marker was unveiled and the names of the Revolutionary soldiers buried there were read aloud by Tim Middlebrook. Amenia Town Supervisor, Leo Blackman, and Town Historian Betsy Strauss were also in the photo.

Nagaland Visitors

AMENIA RECEIVES VISITORS FROM NAGALAND, INDIA   On July 5, 2018, a couple from Nagaland, India, arrived in Amenia for a visit organized by Betsy Strauss of the Amenia Historical Society. Rev. Maken Sanglir and his wife, Narola, along with two American friends, spent a few hours with Strauss touring the sites connected with the lives of the first missionaries to Nagaland, Rev.
