Wassaic Charcoal Kilns now belong to the Town of Amenia

On the morning of July 3, 2025, a small group of local residents gathered at an historic place for an historic occasion. The place was on Deep Hollow Road, the site of two Wassaic Charcoal Kilns that have stood for 200 years as the only architectural remnants of the Amenia Iron Industry. The occasion was the official transfer of ownership of the Kilns from the Deep Hollow Preserve, represented by manager Bernie Leighton, to the Town of Amenia, represented by Town Supervisor Leo Blackman. After the complete renovation of the Kilns in 2022 and the clearing of the land around surrounding them, all at the expense of Deep Hollow Preserve, the Town of Amenia finally accepted this amazing gift.
